Questions, answered plainly.
Witness
What is Witness?
Witness is an app with a live verified map of the world. People photograph or film what is happening where they are, each report is placed where it was recorded, and its confidence reading rises or falls as independent evidence arrives.
Who founded Witness?
Noam Avivi founded Witness in 2025, after a border crossing at Siret closed and the people waiting there had no way to learn why. The company behind the app is Witness Technologies, Inc.
Is Witness free?
Yes. The map and reporting are free.
How do I get access?
Access is by request. Tell us whether you are a reporter, a newsroom or a data team, and your request goes to the right place.
Where does Witness work?
Anywhere. Anyone, anywhere can report, and what appears on the map depends on who was there.
What is the difference between a report and a post?
A report is firsthand, geotagged and timestamped, and it goes on the map with a confidence reading. A post is commentary, context or analysis. It carries a label instead of a number and has a different shape on the map.
Is there a version of this site for AI agents?
Yes. /llms.txt is an index of the site in plain text, /llms-full.txt is the whole site as one Markdown document, and any page is available as Markdown at its address followed by .md.
Reporting
Who can report?
Anyone with a phone who was there. No press credentials or following needed.
Who owns my footage?
You do. You keep the file and the rights. When a newsroom or an organization licenses it through Witness, 70 percent goes to you.
How am I paid?
Through licensing. Each time a newsroom or an organization licenses a file you captured, 70 percent of that license goes to you.
How precise is the location on my reports?
Reports show a place, such as a street or a neighborhood, rather than exact coordinates.
Can I report under a pseudonym?
Yes. Your public name can be a pseudonym. Your account is verified privately.
Verification
How is a report verified?
Verification begins at capture: device, time and location signals are collected when you record. Independent reports that arrive afterwards move its confidence up or down.
What does the confidence number mean?
It shows how sure the system is about a report and what moved that reading. A low number is information too: it means the evidence is thin so far.
Why does it matter who else reported it?
Ten accounts repeating one source is not ten pieces of evidence. Independent reports raise confidence far more than a group sharing one source.
What happens when reports conflict?
A contested claim stops being promoted rather than being removed, and any removal carries a visible reason.
Enterprise
How do newsrooms license footage?
Per use, from the person who captured it, with the capture record and confidence history attached. 70 percent goes to the reporter.
What does the Events API provide?
Geotagged, timestamped, categorized events as JSON, each with a confidence score and a provenance record, filterable by area, category, time window and confidence.
What is the difference between newsroom access and data access?
Newsrooms find and license individual files from the people who captured them. Data teams receive events as structured records over an API.
How does access work for organizations?
Access is granted per organization. Tell us the regions and categories you care about and we scope it with you.
