Witness maps photos and short videos from the people who are there, and shows how confident it is in each one. Not scraped. Not aggregated. Captured by the people who were standing there. ## A map for the world. A feed for everything around it Reports are geotagged, timestamped, and placed. Context, analysis, and discussion live in the feed beside them. - **Pins are sized by confidence.** The more independent evidence behind a report, the larger its pin. - **Reports are circles. Posts are squares.** Firsthand reports and commentary look different, even in a screenshot. - **Numbers are groups of reports.** The ring around a group shows what kinds of reports are inside. - **Related reports become a situation.** When reports describe the same thing, they are gathered under one label. _App screens shown with example reports._ ## How it works, who it pays, and why it exists - [How it works](https://www.thewitnessapp.com/how-it-works): How a report earns its confidence. Capture, corroboration, confidence. And why reports and posts look different. - [For reporters](https://www.thewitnessapp.com/reporters): Your footage stays yours. When a newsroom or an organization licenses what you captured, 70 percent goes to you. - [The story](https://www.thewitnessapp.com/story): A border crossing closed and nobody knew why. Siret, November 2025. The gap that became the company. ## The same events, for the organizations that act on them Every report on the map is also a record, with its confidence and provenance attached. - [Newsrooms](https://www.thewitnessapp.com/newsrooms): Footage you can stand behind. Find footage from the people who were there, see the record behind it, and license it per use. - [Data teams](https://www.thewitnessapp.com/data): Ground truth, structured. A report is recorded where it happened, placed on the map, and weighed against the evidence that arrives after it. ## How a report earns its confidence ### 1 · Capture: Recorded in the Witness camera Device, time, and location signals are collected at the moment of recording, not added afterwards. ### 2 · Corroboration: Other people, other angles Independent evidence raises confidence. Ten accounts repeating one source is not ten pieces of evidence. ### 3 · Confidence: Confidence, not verdicts Each report shows how confident the system is and what moved it, so you can judge for yourself. ## Two kinds of content. Only one of them is evidence - **Reports.** Firsthand, geotagged and timestamped. Every report goes on the map with a confidence reading. - **Posts.** Commentary, context, analysis and reaction. A different shape, and a label instead of a number. ## Confidence, not verdicts Witness shows how confident it is and what moved that reading, rather than declaring what is true. Report confidence, reporter standing and event confidence are scored separately. [How confidence works](https://www.thewitnessapp.com/trust) ## How standing works Accuracy over time raises your standing, and standing raises the weight a single report from you carries on its own. - **New account.** Everyone starts here. A first report is treated as unknown, not as suspect. - **Reporter.** A record of reports that held up. - **Trusted reporter.** A long record of accurate reports. - **Verified correspondent.** A long record, with identity verified privately. ## Questions about verification ### How is a report verified? Verification begins at capture: device, time and location signals are collected when you record. Independent reports that arrive afterwards move its confidence up or down. ### What does the confidence number mean? It shows how sure the system is about a report and what moved that reading. A low number is information too: it means the evidence is thin so far. ### Why does it matter who else reported it? Ten accounts repeating one source is not ten pieces of evidence. Independent reports raise confidence far more than a group sharing one source. ### What happens when reports conflict? A contested claim stops being promoted rather than being removed, and any removal carries a visible reason. --- Web page: https://www.thewitnessapp.com/how-it-works Index for agents: https://www.thewitnessapp.com/llms.txt # Reporters > Capture what is happening where you are. Your footage stays yours, and when it is licensed, 70 percent goes to you. You report what you see, where you already are. Witness is the marketplace and the verification layer, and the footage stays yours. ## How payment works Licensing. When a newsroom, an organization or a research team licenses a file you captured, 70 percent of that is yours. Payment comes from licensing, not from volume. Paying per event would pay people to manufacture events and to run toward danger. 1. **You capture it in Witness.** It goes on the map with its confidence. 2. **A newsroom licenses it.** Per use, with its capture record attached. 3. **You are paid for that use.** The file and the rights stay with you. ## What you keep The file, the rights, and the freedom to license it elsewhere. Witness is the marketplace and the verification layer. ## How standing works Accuracy over time raises your standing, and standing raises the weight a single report from you carries on its own. - **New account.** Everyone starts here. A first report is treated as unknown, not as suspect. - **Reporter.** A record of reports that held up. - **Trusted reporter.** A long record of accurate reports. - **Verified correspondent.** A long record, with identity verified privately. ## Reporting from difficult places Reports show a place rather than exact coordinates. Protective features for high-risk situations are explained in full inside the app, before you rely on them. ## Questions from reporters ### Who can report? Anyone with a phone who was there. No press credentials or following needed. ### Who owns my footage? You do. You keep the file and the rights. When a newsroom or an organization licenses it through Witness, 70 percent goes to you. ### How am I paid? Through licensing. Each time a newsroom or an organization licenses a file you captured, 70 percent of that license goes to you. ### How precise is the location on my reports? Reports show a place, such as a street or a neighborhood, rather than exact coordinates. ### Can I report under a pseudonym? Yes. Your public name can be a pseudonym. Witness is an app with a live verified map of the world. People photograph or film what is happening where they are, each report is placed where it was recorded, and its confidence reading rises or falls as independent evidence arrives. ### Who founded Witness? Noam Avivi founded Witness in 2025, after a border crossing at Siret closed and the people waiting there had no way to learn why. The company behind the app is Witness Technologies, Inc. ### Is Witness free? Yes. The map and reporting are free. ### How do I get access? Access is by request. Tell us whether you are a reporter, a newsroom or a data team, and your request goes to the right place. ### Where does Witness work? Anywhere. Anyone, anywhere can report, and what appears on the map depends on who was there. ### What is the difference between a report and a post? A report is firsthand, geotagged and timestamped, and it goes on the map with a confidence reading. A post is commentary, context or analysis. It carries a label instead of a number and has a different shape on the map. ### Is there a version of this site for AI agents? Yes. /llms.txt is an index of the site in plain text, /llms-full.txt is the whole site as one Markdown document, and any page is available as Markdown at its address followed by .md. ## Reporting ### Who can report? Per use, from the person who captured it, with the capture record and confidence history attached. 70 percent goes to the reporter. ### What does the Events API provide? Geotagged, timestamped, categorized events as JSON, each with a confidence score and a provenance record, filterable by area, category, time window and confidence. ### What is the difference between newsroom access and data access? Newsrooms find and license individual files from the people who captured them. Data teams receive events as structured records over an API. ### How does access work for organizations? Access is granted per organization. Noam Avivi, founder of Witness, on the night that started the company, with photos from the crossing. In November 2025 I was crossing on foot from Ukraine into Romania at Siret. The crossing closed. No announcement, no explanation. The soldiers standing at the barrier did not know why either. Everyone waited. A day later I read that a Russian drone had struck the Orlivka crossing the night of the 21st. That was the answer, and it took a day to reach people who had been standing at the border when it happened. The near miss is not the story. The gap is. Hundreds of people were inside an event and outside the information about it, and that information existed the entire time. It had nowhere structured to go. > Everyone at that border was inside the event and outside the information. That gap is the company. Witness is the structure. ## Photos - Siret crossing · Night of 21 Nov 2025: Night at the Siret crossing: two people step around a flooded road beside buses and a fence. Satellites see heat. Sensors see position. Neither sees a queue at a fuel station, a substation still burning at hour thirty, or a port that quietly reopened. Witness delivers what only a person standing there can record, in a schema you can query. ## What you get | Capability | What it means | | --- | --- | | Events endpoint | Geotagged, timestamped, categorized events as JSON. Filter by bounding box, category, time window, and confidence. | | Confidence, exposed | Every event carries a confidence score and the evidence behind it, so you set your own threshold rather than inheriting ours. | | Provenance | Every reporter-originated event carries a capture record you can defend downstream. | | Managed access | Scoped keys, quotas, and full request logging. | ## Example response (specimen) ```json { "id": "evt_7f3a92c1", "occurred_at": "2026-09-21T21:12:40Z", "category": "infrastructure", "place": { "name": "Lisbon, PT", "lat": 38.7, "lon": -9.1, "radius_km": 1 }, "confidence": { "value": 0.82, "interval": [ 0.74, 0.88 ] }, "independent_reports": 3, "provenance": { "captured_at": "2026-09-21T21:14:07Z", "capture_record": "attached" }, "source": "reporter" } ``` Every event carries a confidence score and the evidence behind it, so you set your own threshold rather than inheriting ours. ## Why it is different > Machines cannot scrape what only a person standing there can record. Aggregated feeds rent their data layer from platforms they do not control, which is why they cannot tell you where a file came from or vouch for what it shows. Witness owns the point of capture. Provenance is the product, not a feature on top of it. ## Access Access is granted per organization. Tell us the regions and categories you care about and we scope it with you. https://www.thewitnessapp.com/access?role=data --- Web page: https://www.thewitnessapp.com/data Index for agents: https://www.thewitnessapp.com/llms.txt # Trust > Witness shows how confident the system is and what evidence moved it. How report confidence, reporter standing and event confidence work. Witness shows how confident the system is, what evidence moved it, and what remains unresolved, instead of declaring what is true. That distinction is the whole design. ## Three things, scored separately | Score | What it measures | | --- | --- | | Report confidence | How much the evidence supports this specific claim. | | Reporter standing | How reliable a reporter has been over time, scored independently of any single report. | | Event confidence | How much independent evidence supports the underlying event across every report attached to it. | Keeping these apart is what stops a trusted account from carrying a false claim, and what stops one contested report from undoing a good reporter. ## How confidence moves - **Evidence is weighed, not counted.** Signals shift confidence according to how much they actually distinguish a real event from a fabricated one. A signal that is absent counts as nothing, not as evidence against. - **Corroboration is weighted by independence.** Two people on opposite sides of a square who do not know each other are worth far more than a cluster sharing one source. - **Confidence attaches to claims, not to clusters.** A report can be confidently placed while a specific assertion inside it stays unresolved, so a real event cannot be used as cover for a false detail. - **New reporters start uncertain, not penalized.** A first report is treated as unknown rather than presumed bad. ## When evidence conflicts The system stops promoting a contested claim rather than removing it, and any removal carries a visible reason. Falsely burying a legitimate report is the worse failure. Ambiguous cases resolve in that direction. ## Moderation handles conduct Moderation deals with conduct: harassment, illegal content and abuse. What happened is a question for the evidence. ## Standing tiers - **New account.** Everyone starts here. A first report is treated as unknown, not as suspect. - **Reporter.** A record of reports that held up. - **Trusted reporter.** A long record of accurate reports. - **Verified correspondent.** A long record, with identity verified privately. --- Web page: https://www.thewitnessapp.com/trust Index for agents: https://www.thewitnessapp.com/llms.txt # Request access > Request access to Witness as a reporter, a newsroom or a data team.
